NY Market Status
Long Island
The Long Island region will be a primary beneficiary of offshore wind given its experience with extreme weather events impacting its beaches, fishing industry, and consistent power outages and high energy costs. These challenges make Long Island a perfect choice to be the heart of our transitioning grid, with all of New York’s five offshore wind farms being developed responsibly off its coast.
New York City
The largest metropolitan area in the US is a perfect staging ground for the promise of offshore wind and the developers are currently looking to NYC for wind turbine staging areas and installation with power interconnections to the grid. Building these facilities will lead to high quality, union jobs along with new training opportunities for our next generation workforce providing equitable economic benefits to all New Yorkers including underserved New York City communities.
New York is boldly delving into offshore wind, with five projects simultaneously underway with a goal to bring 9 GW of offshore wind capacity to the state by 2035, enough to power 30% of the state’s total electricity needs. These five wind farms - the South Fork Wind Farm, Beacon Wind, Sunrise Wind, and Empire Wind 1 and 2 - are all expected to be operational by 2026.
Activities by Region
Capitol District
Albany and the Capital Region are playing a crucial role in the development of New York’s offshore wind industry and will serve as a U.S. hub for the production of towers and other major turbine components. Revitalizing port infrastructure in and around the Capital Region will not only mean good paying jobs bringing beneficial economic development but will put Albany in the global spotlight as it becomes a primary player in the early stages of offshore wind in the United States.
