Responsible Development
Marine and Wildlife Habitats
Offshore wind developers are actively working with environmentalists to ensure our coasts and marine ecosystems are protected. In partnership with the federal Bureau of Ocean Management (BOEM) and New York State government and national environmental organizations and authorities, significant surveys, consultations, and research have been conducted and continues throughout project development to avoid and mitigate impacts to ocean life and critical habitat.
Commercial and Recreational Fisheries
The federal waters off America’s northeastern coast have long supported a thriving fishing industry employing New Yorkers for generations. In collaboration with fishing representatives and state and federal officials, developers are expected to craft detailed plans demonstrating the mutual co-existence of offshore wind development with recreational and commercial fishing and are working to ensure the fishing communities have a voice and are heavily involved for the responsible development of offshore wind in our ocean waters.
Environmental Justice
As the offshore wind industry grows, it can help displace the legacy fossil generation facilities that are heavily concentrated in New York’s underserved frontline communities, and that disproportionately impact the health and well-being of these communities. Responsible offshore wind development encompasses the advancement of social and racial equity and environmental justice.
